We are desperately searching for a very special, experienced home for Romeo. We are not referring to “experienced” in the typical sense of having had a Mal or Siberian before. We are looking for someone that has successfully managed a big strong prey-driven ever so strong Mal before.
Romeo entered foster care with AMRNC after a short stay in a Georgia shelter. He was originally owner surrendered by a family that said they were losing their house and moving into an apartment. He is about 5 years old.
Romeo is a BIG boy in stature, although only 105 pounds. He is neutered, in good health, maintained on heartworm preventive and current on vaccines. He was a bit testy at his last Vet visit, but was managed with a soft muzzle for vaccines. He is a seal and white and his coat is a bit longer and softer.
What does Romeo need? A decent size area to run and burn off energy and most importantly, a person who can physically handle him. He is not the kind of dog that will fare well visiting PetsMart, hanging out in public parks, or worse, dog parks. He does co-exist with other dogs through a fence at his foster home, but needs to be an only dog due to his possessive nature of toys and food.
What are his unique needs? A really secure area…we have 6’ privacy fencing and used fence panels to raise the height to 8-1/2 and 10’ during squirrel/nut season under the pecan trees. He can really jump and is an extremely powerful dog. Hotwiring added to traditional fencing will probably also be needed to assure his safety. He knows how to leverage every ounce of his 105 pounds when he wants something. Birds and squirrels endure endless torment in his area. Many birds have perished in his wake.
Training: Romeo knows the garden variety “sit”, “high 5”, “lie down” and “wait” for his food bowl. In fact he is incredible about this and will not touch his food until he hears the release word. BUT, if he is visually aroused by anything (cats, birds, squirrels, dogs being walked in the area), no words can stop him as I found out the hard way one morning when he saw a cat on the other side of the fence. No pocket pets, please, and he’s just too big to be around children, in our experience. He has been known to open doors and would be a menace running at large. Over time he has become much less tolerant of other dogs as well.
His redeeming qualities: He enjoys human attention and is crate-trained. He likes durable toys like stuffed kongs, jolly balls, and bubbles (he has his own bubble machine). He’s pretty good for grooming if you take it slow and give him a rawhide to keep busy with. He is very clean in his kennel run, but has not been in the house to test his house manners. Surely they would need lots of refinement. When not distracted, he is quite pleasant to be around.
Oh, and did we mention the obvious in how handsome he is? But he’s not for the faint of heart.
