      ADOPT ME!

Deita (NCSR #301) is a 7-year-old, female miniature schnauzer. She has natural ears, a docked tail, and a light salt and pepper coat with lots of curls. She doesn't run, she bounds; she's a jackalope in a schnauzer suit! Deita is a love sponge. She enjoys nothing more than to be cuddled up next to her human and will beg to be included in any couch-time. She is crate-trained, housebroken, and is perfectly content to sleep all day (as long as she has a good view of the yard!). She enjoys having her hair dried with the blow-dryer and is more than willing to help you dry off after a shower, so lock the door! She rides well in the car, content to simply sit in the back seat. Deita is a special dog with special needs. She has been recently diagnosed with osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease (DJD) of the spine. She currently has some minor paralysis in her hind legs which makes her appear unbalanced and uncoordinated. She has just started a course of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) for inflammation of the muscles around the spine as well as a glucosamine and chondroitin supplement for joint mobility. It is likely she will need to continue this treatment for the rest of her life. DJD is not a rare condition by any means and presents differently in different breeds and in different individuals of a breed. It progresses in an unpredictable manner toward muscular weakness and paralysis, loss of bladder and rectal sphincter control, etc., but may remain static for some time. Only time will tell. It is clear that Deita will require a special adoptive family. A quiet household would be best. She needs a home with no stairs and either no other pets in the home or possibly one other non-assertive and calm dog. She cannot be trusted in the company of cats, as she has been known to give chase. Deita will require help upon entering and exiting the car, so her owner will need to have the ability to lift her in and out. She's talkative and will bark at anything, so an apartment is not recommended. She enjoys short walks around the neighborhood, but no longer than 20-30 minutes at a time as recommended by her current veterinarian. On walks, Deita will pull like a steam engine if allowed. Please note that due to the osteoarthritis in her spine, use of a regular harness is not recommended. She wants nothing more than to see and smell everything and is just so excited, she can't wait to do so! She barks at everyonecyclists, joggers, strollers, other walkersand will lunge and bark at other dogs. It is the opinion of her foster mom that this behavior is borne more out of a mix of excitement and anxiety than out of any kind of aggression. We are currently working with a trainer to correct this behavior and improve her public manners. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
